'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (10.26.12)

The Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar!

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by 'tim' as the Fairchild C-119

It's back-to-back wins here in the Name The Plane game for 'Tim' - great job! It is indeed the Fairchild C-119, also known as the Flying Boxcar. And finally we had a game that took more than 45 minutes! This one ran just a little under two hours, tho I think Time had the answer shortly after he saw the cropped pic : )

I'm hoping Tim makes it to OSH13 to collect his multiple bacon sandwich prizes... he's definitely earned them.

Keep an eye out for another NTP game to pop up here on AirPigz (there's no particular schedule, tho usually it's on a Saturday night) - you can follow @NameThePlane on twitter for advance notifications about an hour before the game starts. Thanx everyone for playing along!

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by 'tim' as the Fairchild C-119

Here's a fresh Name The Plane game on a Friday rather than its regular (tho no regular schedule) Saturday night slot. Be the first person to correctly ID both MAKE and MODEL of the aircraft pictured above and you'll win a bacon sandwich at OSH13!  NOTE: Your answers must go in the 'comments' area in this post.

And if this game goes anything like that last several, we'll have a winner in less than an hour!

All you gotta do is ID both MAKE and MODEL to win - so if you've got sharp aircraft ID skills, be the first person to ID both MAKE and MODEL of this aircraft to be the winner!

As always, please don't use the shotgun approach to answers - only put up truly educated guesses that you've arrived at via really thinking it thru.

And I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but to win, you have to give me both the MAKE and MODEL! : )

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (10.6.12)

North American F-107 - 3 built in the '50's - one on display at the Air Force Museum

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by 'tim' as the North American F-107

I really thought my cropped pic below would last at least 24 hours in the Name The Plane game, but once again I was wrong. In just 25 minutes, 'tim' provided both the make and model: the North American F-107. Amazing job Tim! I hope you can make it to OSH13 to claim your bacon sandwich prize : )

The F-107 is a very interesting aircraft, and seeing the one over in Dayton Ohio at the Air Force Museum is really, really cool. The airplane is in the R&D Hangar which allows you to get literally right up to it for close examination. I look it over closely every time I get over there.

You can learn a little more about the F-107 in my CoolPix post from December 2010: CoolPix - Modern Military: North American F-107 'Man Eater'. And thanx to everyone who got in on this short-lived Name The Plane game!

The Name The Plane game is returning at its regular Saturday night slot. If you didn't know, the game pops up with little warning (follow @NameThePlane on twitter for advance notification) and the first person to correctly ID both MAKE and MODEL of the aircraft pictured above will win a bacon sandwich at OSH13!  NOTE: Your answers must go in the 'comments' area in this post.

Once again I've dug deep into aviation history with this challenge, and I'm specifically hoping that no one comes up with a correct answer in the typical 45 minutes or less. I'd be very happy if we get 24 hours out of this game : )

All you gotta do is ID both MAKE and MODEL to win - so if you've got sharp aircraft ID skills, be the first person to ID both MAKE and MODEL of this aircraft to be the winner!

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (8.16.12)

(click pic to enlarge)  Hot homebuilt from the 60's - Ed Lesher's record setting Teal

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by 'seerjfly' as the Lesher Teal

I really thought my cropped pic below would last at least 24 hours in the Name The Plane game that I put up at lunchtime today. I was wrong. In a little over an hour, 'seerjfly' offered up the correct answer of the Lesher Teal. Getting this airplane correct from that cropped pic is definitely worthy of the bacon sandwich prize at OSH13!

I have lots of memories of seeing this little all-metal one-of-a-kind homebuilt from the mid 60's out on the flightline at Oshkosh in the early 70's. I spent a lot of time looking over the details, and it inspired a whole lot of thinking in my not-yet-a-teen head. I think this airplane deserves a lot more attention than it typically gets... hopefully one of these days I'll have the opportunity to put together a really detailed post on both Ed Lesher and his 500kg class (1,102 lb) record-setting Teal. This little Continental O-200 powered airplane set a lot of closed course records, and near the end of it's record days, in 1975, set the straight line distance record of 1,835 miles!

Ed Lesher passed away in 1998 at age 83. I never knew him, but his little aluminum pusher with the odd retractable landing gear sure was an important part of my early days of learning about home-built (and home-designed) airplanes. His children donated the airplane the EAA Museum in 2002.

You can learn more in this wiki page about about Ed Lesher and some cool record-setting details about the Teal in this page from the EAA Musuem

You never know when I'll feel the urge to throw up a little Name The Plane action here on AirPigz. Usually it happens on a Saturday night, but here we are on a Thursday in the middle of day with a new game popping up... and it's also your first chance to win a bacon sandwhich at OSH13! The first correct answer in the comments area below (with both make and model) wins a tasty bacon sandwich at next year's Oshkosh.

I've dug deep into aviation history with this challenge, and I'm specifically hoping that no one comes up with a correct answer in the typical 45 minutes or less. I'd be very happy if we get 24 hours out of this game : )

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (6.19.12)

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by 'Tim' as the Boeing 2707 SST cockpit

It only took about 12 minutes to find a winning answer, and it came from 'Tim' on his second try after providing a little more detail. This cockpit is the Boeing 2707 SST, or technically the 2707-300. It's from the prototype mockup of the forward fuselage section that's on display at the Hiller Museum south of San Francisco California.

There's so much story to share about the Boeing effort to build a large and extremely fast SST in the late 1960's. One day I'll get around to putting together an extensive post about it... til then, check out the Boeing 2707 wiki entry and the Hiller Museum page on the Boeing 2707. And thanx to everyone who played this time around (even tho it was a really short game : )

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (4.21.12)

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by @manp as an Aeronca Sedan

As is often the case, it took just over 30 minutes to find a correct answer for the Name The Plane game. This time twitter follower @manp came up with the correct answer of an Aeronca 15AC Sedan. I sure hope @manp will be at OSH12 to claim his bacon sandwich prize! Btw, this pic of the Sedan (on floats!) was taken over at the seaplane base during OSH11.

Thanx to all who played tonight... watch for more of the Name The Plane game in the future here on AirPigz. Follow @NameThePlane on twitter for updates about 30 minutes before the game is played (usually late on Saturday nights)

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by John Conway as a Lockheed U-2

I'm amazed how often this game doesn't even make it to 30 minutes. John Conway got the correct answer in about 15 minutes. This sweet U-2 is at the Air Force Museum... it's a pic I took on Sunday January 29, 2012 at the AirPigz Air Force Museum MeetUp. Congrats John for winning a bacon sandwhich at OSH12!

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd by 'Dovan' as a Saab 35 Draken

It took just 40 minutes for Dovan to provide the correct answer... it's one of the very unique and extremely cool airplanes to come out of Sweden: the Saab 35 Draken. This pic had several leaning toward the McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) F-18, but as the pic below shows, it certainly isn't! Great job Dovan for getting it right... I hope you'll be able to collect your bacon sandwich at OSH12 : )

It's Saturday night... and if you've got nothing better to do, maybe you'll wanna give it a go trying to ID this cropped down image in another Name The Plane game. All you gotta do is ID both MAKE and MODEL, and the first person to get it right wins a bacon sandwhich prize at OSH12. So, if you've got sharp aircraft ID skills, be the first one to ID both MAKE and MODEL of this aircraft to snag the NTP bragging rights.

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (10.27.11)

GAME OVER - correctly ID'd as the NASA AD-1 (oblique wing research aircraft)

Game Over! I really didn't think there would be a correct answer in less than 30 minutes, but Casey DuBose was the first to offer up an answer and it was correct! The airplane is the NASA AD-1 oblique wing research aircraft from the late 70's. Designed by Burt Rutan and built by Ames Industrial. The airplane was a very inexpensive testbed that provided a significant amount of data on the oblique wing concept.

I remember seeing it fly up at Oshkosh... not sure which year but probably around 1981 or 1982. The things you see at Oshkosh!

Congrats to Casey for snagging a bacon sandwich at OSH12 : )

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (9.23.11)

Game Over - correctly identified as a the Ray Hegy Chuparosa homebuilt

GAME OVER - Congrats to Bill Rayfield for having the correct answer! Above is the full picture that the cropped picture for the game came from. The airplane is the one-of-a-kind homebuilt built and flown by Ray Hegy and named El Chuparosa (the Spanish word for hummingbird), or sometimes simply as Chuparosa. The airplane was first flown in 1959 and it became a mainstay of the early days of the annual EAA Fly-In and Convention which was held at Rockford Illinois from 1959 until 1970 when it moved to Oshkosh.

Ray was often the first person up in the air early in the mornings flying this tiny 12 foot 10 inch wingspan Continental A-65 powered cutie around the pattern. In the old days, a large part of the day was taken up by allowing homebuilt, antique or classic airplanes to fly in a pattern around the runway. I remember as a kid hearing Ray streak thru the sky in the early morning as a perfect wake-up call for the day!

Ray was well known as a wood prop maker, and of course, the prop on El Chuparosa was carved by him. The airplane has been on display in the EAA Museum for many years now. Ray passed away in 2002.

Here's a pic I posted as a CoolPix a while back of El Chuparosa after the very first Oshkosh in 1970 had ended. Click the pic to go to the full post (with big image) and more info on Ray and his really cool little homebuilt.

I'm still trying to make sense of this last week... but in the middle of it all, life seems to go on. With that in mind, I figure it's time for another Name The Plane challenge. All you gotta do is ID both MAKE and MODEL to win a bacon sandwhich prize at OSH12 - and this one should be a pretty good challenge. So, if you've got sharp aircraft ID skills, be the first person to ID both MAKE and MODEL of this aircraft to be the winner! (I'll allow a little room for different interpretations of make and model on this one)

'Name The Plane' - ID MAKE And MODEL For Free Bacon! (8.15.11)

Game Over - correctly identified as a Swearingen SX300

Here's the full picture of the Swearingen SX300 that the cropped picture below came from. It was a beautiful example of an SX300, and I took a large number of up-close, detail images of the airplane for use in a unique upcoming post that'll give you an interesting photo experience with a really fast, all metal homebuilt.

Congrats to 'dudewanarace' for getting the correct answer... and for emailing me the 'make' of the airplane when the system was acting up and not allowing all comments to post properly. Hopefully the next game will work a little smoother. Watch for more NTP games to show up randomly : )

It's time for another Name The Plane challenge, the first since OSH11. As always, this one may be too easy, but you just never know. All you gotta do is ID both MAKE and MODEL to win a bacon sandwhich prize at OSH12 - I don't know about you, but I'm already tired of waiting for the next Oshkosh to get here! So, if you've got sharp aircraft ID skills, be the first person to ID both MAKE and MODEL of this aircraft to be the winner!

Your answers must go in the 'comments' area in this post, and as always, please don't use the shotgun approach to answers - only put up truly educated guesses that you've arrived at via really thinking it thru.

And I'm not sure if I mentioned, that to win, you have to give me both the MAKE and MODEL! : )
